"Life without Music would be a mistake" Friedrich Nietzsche
Elia Do Mar (born Elia Martins Alexandre) is a dynamic jazz pianist based in London, known for his innovative approach to the genre. With a Portuguese father and Italian mother, Elia's cultural background is as rich and diverse as his music. He began playing classical piano at the age of five, but it was during his teenage years, through a self-guided exploration of jazz, that he discovered his true musical identity. Inspired by the legendary Blue Note pianists—Horace Silver, Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Clark, and especially Red Garland—Elia has crafted a sound that pays homage to the greats while carving out his own distinct voice.
Elia's live performances have captivated audiences across London and beyond. From the annual Battersea BBQ and Jazz at St. Dionis Church to the Hotel L’Auberge d’Aillon et d’Ailleurs and The Clapham Grand, his passion for jazz and his ability to create a magnetic live atmosphere have made him a standout performer. In August 2023, his quartet made waves at the Sands End Arts & Community Centre, where they broke attendance records and solidified their place in the local jazz scene.
Elia has had the privilege of working with a range of respected musicians, including John Williamson (bass), Dave Davies (drums), Nye Banfield (tenor sax), Joel Waters (drums), Dave Holland (bass), Conor Murray (bass), Josh Wakeham (tenor sax), Ray Rafols (violin), and Scarlett Halton (vocals). Alongside Dave Davies, Elia co-runs a monthly charity jazz gig and jam session at the Walnut Tree Café, Sands End Arts & Community Centre, which has quickly become a community favorite.
In January 2024, Elia and his quartet—featuring Josh Wakeham on tenor sax, Conor Murray on bass, and Dave Davies on drums—released their debut album On The Move. The album, a mix of original compositions and fresh takes on jazz standards, reflects Elia’s deep respect for the tradition of jazz while pushing the boundaries of improvisation and expression. It is already being hailed as a promising debut from a young talent on the rise. Elia has also studied at the Royal Academy of Music.
Elia is not only a performer but also a prolific composer, having written over seventy original pieces in the past year. His dedication to teaching is equally impressive, as he offers lessons in beginner piano, jazz piano, and jazz history, sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation of musicians. Beyond music, Elia enjoys creative writing, reading, and honing his skills at table tennis.
